Play A Day
Post Secret: I draw our customers... when I should be working
Lights come up on YOUNG MAN in the diner where he works. It is about 11 pm, he wants to go home, but he has to work until 12:30. He sits on a stool at the counter drawing on a napkin with a blue pen from his apron. The place isn't very busy. He is drawing an OLDER MAN reading yesterdays paper and drinking coffee. YOUNG WOMAN (a waitress) enters from the kitchen, carrying a pot of coffee, and silently asks the OLDER MAN if he would like a refill. OLDER MAN nods, YOUNG WOMAN fills up his mug, and stands over YOUNG MANS shoulder.
YOUNG WOMAN
Dave is going to be mad that you aren't working.
YOUNG MAN
There's hardly anyone here, besides I'm on my ten minute break.
YOUNG WOMAN
you have been a ten minute break for half an hour. [pause] Why do you draw people like that anyway?
YOUNG MAN
Like what?
YOUNG WOMAN
I dunno, strangers. Why would you want to draw them?
YOUNG MAN
I don't know I guess I'm curious. [pause] Like where do you think he's going after? What's an old guy like him even doing out this time of night? Don't you ever wonder? There are so many people out there that you don't know.
YOUNG WOMAN
I try to spend my time on the people in front of me, the ones that matter. Don't you ever wonder about the people you have in your life already?
YOUNG MAN goes back to drawing and YOUNG WOMAN sighs, and exits to the kitchen. Lights fade.
Lights come up on YOUNG MAN drawing a young couple on the back of a receipt that YOUNG WOMAN is waiting on. Lights fade.
Lights come up YOUNG MAN closing up, and YOUNG WOMAN putting on her coat, then wrapping a scarf around her neck. Her shift ended half an hour ago, but she lingers.
YOUNG WOMAN
[trying to sound casual] What are you doing tomorrow?
YONG MAN
I don't know. Not much, I have the day off.
YOUNG WOMAN
[hopeful] Oh really? me too.
YOUNG MAN
Cool.
There is a long pause YOUNG WOMAN is trying to get up the courage to speak, but can't seem to do it, she almost does but then YOUNG MAN finishes his tasks.
YOUNG MAN
Well, I guess that's it then.
YOUNG WOMAN
Um, yeah I guess so.
They exit. Lights fade.
